What Is a Crochet Bear Lovey?

This crochet bear lovey is a small security blanket featuring a soft bear head and cute little arms attached to a soft crochet lovey.

This little lovey is lightweight, easy to carry, and perfect for little hands to hold during naps, car rides, and bedtime.

This blog post will show you how to make the bear's head, ears, and arms. Be sure to follow the Granny Triangle Lovey Pattern Blog Post for how to make the Lovey and attach the bear.

Let's get crocheting!

Pattern Instructions

MATERIALS:

  • Yarn
    • Super bulky weight (6) yarn in beige ~20g
      • Premier Basix Chenille - Sand
    • Medium weight (4) yarn in black ~1g
      • Loops & Threads, Impeccable - Black
  • 6.5 mm crochet hook
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch = chain
  • dec = decrease
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

HELPFUL NOTES:

  • The bear is crocheted in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
  • The numbers within parentheses at the end of each round are the total number of stitches for that round, example: (12).
  • An alternative to the magic circle is the chain 2 method. This is the method I used to complete the pattern.
  • I crochet using the yarn over/yarn over method.
  • Finished lovey size: approx. 10" tall x 10" wide.

BEAR HEAD

Use the 6.5 mm hook and super bulky weight (6) yarn in brown.

Round 1 8 sc in a magic circle (8)

Round 2 (inc) x 8 (16)

Round 3 – (2 sc, inc) x 5, 1 sc (21)

Rounds 4 to 5 – 1 sc in each st around (21) 2 rounds

Round 6 – (2 sc, dec) x 5, 1 sc (16)

Round 7 – 1 sc in each st around (16)

Round 8 – (dec) x 8 (8) slst to the first dec

Fasten off and leave a long tail to weave the last round closed.

Stuff the head to hold shape, do not overstuff.

Weave the tail through the front loops of round 8. Pull gently to close and sew in your ends.

NOSE: Once the ears are attached, use the tapestry needle and medium weight yarn in black to embroider a nose centered between rounds 4 + 5, approx. 1 or 2 sts across, and down round 5. photo 2a

BEAR EARS

Use the 6.5 mm hook and super bulky weight (6) yarn in brown.

  • The ears are worked using surface stitches.
  • Work all stitches from row 1 around the same stitch post.
  • Start with a slip knot on the hook. At round 3 of the head *photo 2b* work a slst to attach and follow the instructions below:

Row 1 – [2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc] (6)

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Note: Sew both yarn tails in front of the ear to create the curve shape of the ear. *photo 2c*

Repeat for the second ear, with approx. 3 visible incs at round 2.

BEAR ARMS

Use the 6.5 mm hook and super bulky weight (6) yarn in brown.

Round 1 6 sc in a magic circle (6)

Rounds 2 to 4 1 sc in each st around (6) 3 rounds

Round 5 – dec, 4 sc (5)

Round 6 – 1 sc in each st around (5)

Do not stuff.

Flatten round 6 together and sc through both sides to close, 2 or 3 sc.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for attaching.

Repeat for the second arm.
