This FREE rainbow crochet pattern is designed to fit any of my animal crochet patterns. One little addition that carries so much meaning. I designed this small rainbow to be sewn onto my crochet animals as a special gift for rainbow babies — a little symbol of hope, love, and the incredible journey that brought them here.

What Is a Rainbow Baby?
A rainbow baby is a baby born following a miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or other pregnancy or infant loss.
The term comes from the idea of a rainbow appearing after a storm. It doesn't erase the storm that came before it, but it can represent hope, love, and a new beginning.
That's part of why I wanted this little rainbow to be something simple and gentle.
A Tiny Rainbow With a Big Meaning
The rainbow itself is very small — just a little crochet detail that can be sewn onto any of my patterns.
I wanted to create something that could beautifully say:
You are loved.
And you are so special.
The perfect little symbol of love and hope.
Let's get into this little pattern.
The Pattern
Materials:
- Medium weight (4) Yarn - Big Twist, Living in colours: Spa, Mustard, Soft Peach
- Crochet Hook: 5mm
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Your favourite Cosy Pattern. I used my Derbie the Duck Mini Snuggler and Merry the Mouse Mini Stuffie.
Helpful Notes:
- The rainbow is worked in rows.
- You will work around a foundation chain for row 1.
- Cut your working yarn at the end of each row.
- I recommend using a standing sc when starting a new colour.
- I crochet using the yarn over/yarn over method.
- Finished size: approx. 1.25" tall
Abbreviations:
US Terms
- blo = back loop only
- ch = chain
- inc = increase
- sc = single crochet
Pattern:
Use the 5mm hook and start with colour 1 (blue used).
Chain 4 start row 1 in the second chain from the hook
Row 1 – 2 sc, sc x 4 in the last ch space, (now working on the other side of the chain) 2 sc (8) Cut colour 1
Work row 2 with colour 2 (yellow used).
Start row 2 in the bottom right corner.
Row 2 – blo: 3 sc, 2 inc, 3 sc (10) Cut colour 2
Work row 3 with colour 3 (pink used).
Start row 3 in the bottom right corner.
Row 3 – blo: 4 sc, 2 inc, 4 sc (12)
Cut a long finishing tail of colour 3 to sew the rainbow to the animal. Weave in all other the ends into the back of the rainbow.
Attaching:
Use the tapestry needle and the long finishing tail to sew onto the animal.
To help hide the finishing tail once the rainbow is attached, use any back loop/3rd loop from the back of the rainbow to attach.
And your sweet little rainbow animal is done!
