Capybara Granny Triangle Lovey

What Is a Crochet Capybara Lovey?

This crochet capybara lovey is a small security blanket featuring a soft capybara head with all the little details and cute little arms attached to a soft and an orange (the fruit) inspired lovey. 

This little lovey is lightweight, easy to carry, and perfect for little hands to hold during naps, car rides, and bedtime.

Pattern Instructions

MATERIALS:

  • Yarn
    • Medium weight (4) yarn in orange and green
      • Colour 1: Big Twist, Living - Orange
      • Colour 2: Loops & Threads, Impeccable - Citron
      • Colour 3: Patons, Canadiana - Pumpkin
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch = chain
  • dec = decrease
  • dc = double crochet
  • dc-cl = double crochet cluster
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • hdc-inc = half double crochet increase
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

HELPFUL NOTES:

  • The granny triangle lovey is worked in joined rounds. The chains at the beginning of each round do not count as stitches.
  • The numbers within parentheses at the end of each round are the total number of stitches for that round, example: (12).
  • An alternative to the magic circle is the chain 2 (or chain 3) method. This is the method I used to complete the pattern.
  • I crochet using the yarn over/yarn over method.
  • Finished size: approx. 10" tall x 10" wide.
  • Double Crochet Cluster (dc-cl): *yarn over, insert and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook* repeat 2 more times for 4 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

THE GRANNY TRIANGLE LOVEY PATTERN

Use the 5.5 mm hook and the medium weight (4) yarn in orange (yellow used in photos).

Round 1 – 9 dc in a magic circle, slst to the first dc (9)

Or round 1: Ch3, work 9 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook, slst to the first dc (9)

Round 2 – ch2, (dc-cl, ch1) x 9, slst to the first dc-cl (18)

The stitches noted as “[..., ch2, ...]” are to be worked in the same stitch and will create the corner spaces.

Round 3 – ch2, in the same st create the first corner: [hdc-inc, ch2, hdc-inc], work all sts in the top of each dc-cl st *photo 1a*: (hdc-inc) x 2, work the next corner: [hdc-inc, ch2, hdc-inc], (hdc-inc) x 2, work the last corner: [hdc-inc, ch2, hdc-inc], (hdc-inc) x 2, slst to the first hdc (30)

Round 4 – slst to the corner space, ch2, in each corner space work: [3 dc, ch2, 3 dc, ch1], and in each space after the [hdc-inc] *photo 1b* work: [dc-cl, ch1], repeat around, slst to the first dc (45)

Round 5 – slst to the corner, ch2, in each corner space work: [hdc-inc, ch2, hdc-inc], in the middle dc corner st *photo 1c* work: [hdc-inc], in each ch1 space across work: [hdc-inc], in the middle dc from the corner work the last [hdc-inc], repeat around, slst to the first hdc (54)


ATTACHING THE ANIMAL

Use the Clemie the Capybara Snuggler Pattern or Clemie the Capybara Stuffie Pattern. Make the head and the arms, then attach them using the instructions below.

ATTACH THE HEAD:

Use the tapestry needle and the same medium weight yarn (4) that you used for the lovey at round 2.

  • Cut a very long piece of yarn, to be used to attach TWICE around the head to the granny triangle lovey.
  • Position the head so that it is pointing towards one of the corners *photo 2a*, begin attaching around the bottom of the head to round 2 of the blanket. *photo 2b + 2c*
  • Sew around the head and lovey approx. 2 times to be sure the head is secure. photo 32
  • Weave in the ends.

ATTACH THE ARMS:

Use the tapestry needle and the finishing tails from the arms.

  • Use the finishing tails from the arms to attach to the base of the head.
  • Sew the arms equally on both sides of the head, where the head and the blanket meet. *photo 2e*
  • Be sure the arms are fully secure. photo 2f
  • Weave in the ends.


THE LEAF HEADBAND PATTERN

Use the 5.5 mm hook and the medium weight (4) yarn in green.

  • Adjust the starting chain, if needed, to fit around your Capybara head.


THE BAND PATTERN

Chain 39

Slst to the first ch (do not twist the chain)

Weave in the ends.


THE LARGE LEAF PATTERN

Chain 5 (start round 1 in the 2nd chain from the hook)

Round 1 – 2 hdc, 1 sc, slst in the last ch space, (now working on the other side of the chain) 1 sc, 2 hdc (7) slst to the first hdc of the round

Bind off and leave a long tail to attach to the band. This is the bottom of the leaf.


THE SMALL LEAF PATTERN

Chain 4 (start round 1 in the 2nd chain from the hook)

Round 1 – 1 hdc, 1 sc, slst in the last ch space, (now working on the other side of the chain) 1 sc, 1 hdc (5) slst to the first hdc of the round

Bind off and leave a long tail to attach to the band. This is the bottom of the leaf.

ATTACHING

Sew the bottom of the large leaf anywhere on the headband.

Sew the bottom of the small leaf directly beside the large leaf on the headband.

Weave in all ends.
